Open Award: Cavaliers’ Distinguished Teaching Professorship

The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost issues a call for nominations each fall. Nominees are considered for all Open Awards for which they are eligible. Please do not specify or nominate separately for each Open award.

Qualifications

This chair recognizes an eminent scholar for outstanding and enduring excellence in the teaching of undergraduates.

Eligibility

Tenured, full-time faculty at the associate or full professor rank, who teach undergraduate courses. Previous winners of an award administered by the Teaching Awards Committee within the last five years are ineligible for an Open Award.

Award Information

This two-year chair appointment includes summer wages, associated fringe benefits, and/or research funds totaling $25,000 annually.

Cavaliers’ Distinguished Teaching Professors are expected to work with the Teaching Resource Center during the two-year period of the Chair (and preferably thereafter) to help enhance teaching at the University. They are also requested to consider teaching a University Seminar (USEM) at least once while holding the Chair.

History

The Cavaliers’ Distinguished Teaching Professorship was established in 1991. Normally one Cavaliers’ DTP is selected each year for a two-year term.
