The University of Virginia will be hosting their second Academic Accessibility Workshop, focusing on universal design practices and strategies for learning. In cooperation with the Coordinator of Academic Accessibility and the Center for Teaching Excellence, we are excited to present Luis Pérez.

Luis is an inclusive learning advocate based in St. Petersburg, Florida. He has more than a decade of experience working with educators to help them integrate technology in ways that empower all learners. Luis holds a doctorate in special education and a master’s degree in instructional technology from the University of South Florida, and he is the author of Mobile Learning for All: Supporting Accessibility with the iPad, from Corwin Press. Luis was selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) in 2009. He is on the board of the Florida Alliance for Assistive Services and Technology (FAAST) and also serves as the Professional Learning Chair of the Inclusive Learning Network of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), which honored him as its 2016 Outstanding Inclusive Educator. His work has appeared in publications such Teaching Exceptional Children, Closing the Gap Solutions, THE Journal, and The Loop Magazine. In addition to his work in educational technology, Luis is an avid photographer whose work has been featured on Better Photography magazine, Business Insider, the New York Times Bits Blog and the Sydney Morning Herald. Luis has presented at national and international conferences such as South by Southwest EDU, ISTE, CSUN, ATIA and Closing the Gap.

Luis will also highlight the accessibility features of the iPhone and iPad handheld devices, as well as Mac computers. If you use an Apple iPad, iPhone, or Mac laptop be sure to bring it with you to explore accessibility settings as you move through this workshop.

Sponsored by the UVA Executive Vice President and Provost Office, there is no charge to attend this workshop. However, we do need you to register!

Registration includes lunch, workshop materials including a copy of Dr. Pérez's new e-book "Zoom In", and parking for non-UVA affiliated attendees.

Both the Coordinator for Academic Accessibility (COAA) and the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) work within the broader academic scope of the EVP & Provost Office. The COAA works to ensure accessibility for all to the academic experience at UVA while the CTE  is a pan-University center for collegial community and committed conversation about teaching at all levels and in all academic disciplines. By combining efforts, the COAA and CTE strive to create an inclusive environment for all members of the academic community.
