Guidance for Classroom Instruction, Fall 2021

As a follow-up to the May 10, 2021 memorandum addressing classroom instruction for the Fall 2021 semester, I write to provide updated guidance for classroom instruction. The guidance below supersedes and supplements the earlier guidance and is given for the Fall 2021 semester only. Additional updates will be provided in the weeks and months to come, with a public update to all faculty, staff, students, and families no later than July 15, 2021. Please review this memo and distribute as appropriate.

  1. Default mode of instruction will be in person. During the fall 2021 semester, all courses are expected to occur in person, except for courses taught online prior to the COVID-19 pandemic or as part of an online program.

    1. Faculty members, or course instructors, may not choose, by themselves, to shift from an in-person mode of instruction to one of the online, hybrid, or remoteoption modes of instruction. Instruction modes are described here.

    2. Deans may select some courses to be taught online, hybrid, or remote-option for pedagogical reasons or to provide instruction to the small number of students who will not be able to be in person for approved reasons. (See reasons listed under (c), below.) These decisions will be made in consultation with the provost.

    3. The only approved reason that a student would be allowed to be enrolled yet not attend classes on Grounds are:

      • Students who have a verified and approved medical disability such that they are unable to be in residence. If a student is deemed to have a verified medical/disability-related condition, SDAC will work directly with school representatives to determine what accommodation is appropriate. Please see the accompanying detailed guidance entitled “Guidance and Procedure Summary, Student or Faculty Requests for Course-Related Accommodations for Fall 2021”.

      • Students enrolled in an exclusively online program.

      • International students who are abroad and unable to get a visa to come to Charlottesville in time for the start of the semester (documentation required). The provost office and schools will work together to determine what options are available to affected students.

    4. International faculty who are abroad and unable to secure a visa to come to Charlottesville in time for the start of the semester (documentation required) may request to begin their courses online, with the permission of the dean and in consultation with the provost.

  2. Exceptions to in-person instruction due to disability. Faculty seeking a disabilityrelated accommodation should follow the Procedures for Employees with Disability to Request Workplace Accommodations. Please see the accompanying detailed guidance entitled “Guidance and Procedure Summary, Student or Faculty Requests for Course Related Accommodations for Fall 2021”.

  3. Availability of leave. Faculty are reminded of their rights to take leave under FMLA for authorized self-care and care for family members. The University has a detailed leave policy that describes various other types of temporary full- or part-time leaves.
