Alex Hernandez is the Dean of the School for Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) as well as the Vice Provost for Online Learning, a part-time administrative appointment. As vice provost he is responsible for supporting schools across Grounds to advance online learning through a thriving portfolio of online programs that expands access to UVA, serves students throughout their lives, and opens pathways to residential programs. These efforts will culminate in a University-wide strategy that integrates work-based learning, career development, and the liberal arts. Alex joined SCPS in 2018 and the provost’s office in 2021.
Before joining the University, he worked for a national education foundation, the Charter School Growth Fund, where he built one of the largest portfolios of innovative K12 schools in the country. He has years of experience expanding high-quality education programs and expertise in linking quality instruction with educational technology. Hernandez writes frequently about the future of learning, and has a special interest in increasing college access, success, and career readiness.
Hernandez launched his education career through a continuing studies program, which allowed him to teach high school math in South Los Angeles. He later became an administrator for Portland Public Schools in Oregon, and then an area superintendent for Aspire Public Schools in California. Prior to entering the field of education, he worked at Steamboat Ventures, Disney’s venture capital arm, and at J.P. Morgan.
Hernandez has an MBA and MA in Education from Stanford University, and a BA from Claremont McKenna College. He is a moderator for the Aspen Global Leadership Network and a Pahara-Aspen Fellow.
