UVA Acts uses performance and dialogue to promote vibrant, equitable spaces for working and learning at the University of Virginia. In this online version of The Inclusive Teaching Toolkit: First Days, Dr. Timmons and Dr. Erickson teach different sections of the same large-enrollment introductory course. Step into a student’s shoes to observe their course introductions and reflect upon your own teaching practices for the first day of class.

This session will provide new faculty with an overview of key supports available to students who are managing personal, physical health, or mental health concerns. We will discuss common serious issues that arise for students and the ways in which Student Affairs staff collaborate with faculty to support students' well-being to enable them to stay focused and active in the classroom. We will assist faculty in learning to recognize the signs of students in distress and how to connect those students to resources to assist them.
Panelists will include a representative from the Office of the Dean of Students as well as Student Health staff representing Medical Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Student Disability Access Center from Student Health. Laurie Casteen and Team
