The University of Virginia announced today that Scott C. Beardsley has been selected as the ninth dean of the University of Virginia Darden School of Business. He will also occupy the Charles C. Abbott Professorship in Business Administration, traditionally held by the dean. Currently a senior partner of McKinsey & Company, Beardsley will assume the role Aug. 1.

The University of Virginia celebrated the historical, political and cultural implications of the fall of Berlin Wall last week, remembering the 25th anniversary of the wall’s dismantling. Hosting students, community members and visitors, The Berlin Wall Symposium featured events that reflected on the Cold War tension embedded in the wall and world developments in the 25 years since its fall.
Its name is Rivanna, and it’s the University of Virginia’s new $2.4 million Cray computing cluster, a high-performance machine – really a combination of linked high-power computers (hence, “cluster”) – designed to greatly enhance and establish computationally intensive and data-intensive research at the University.
As dean of the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science, James H. Aylor has grown enrollment, added faculty, and increased research revenue.
Whether exploring the night sky, American literature or the latest digital technologies, University of Virginia teachers take students on “a shared journey,” as one professor called it, until their students’ learning prepares them to strike out on their own with gifts they’ll use in their careers and lives.
Before the time of formal graduation exercises at the University of Virginia, faculty and students gathered with the public to learn the results of final exams and hear accomplished students present their research to the community.
The University of Virginia is preparing for a yearlong celebration commemorating the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall. From March through November, U.Va. will host an outdoor exhibit of international significance, and will present a comprehensive program of supporting events.
