Dear faculty colleagues:
It is a pleasure to share that Ambassador Stephen Mull is joining the University of Virginia as Vice Provost for Global Affairs. His first day with us is tomorrow, Aug. 1, 2018. There will be a broader announcement when students return to Grounds this fall.
Currently the Acting Undersecretary for Political Affairs for the U.S. Department of State, Steve’s service as a career diplomat spans several decades and includes two stints as an Ambassador (to Poland and to Lithuania) and as a senior advisor to two Secretaries of State, as well as highly visible government postings and several assignments abroad. His past appointments include Executive Secretary of the State Department under Secretary Hillary Clinton, acting Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, and Lead Coordinator for implementation of the Iran nuclear deal from 2015 to 2017, just to name a few. Most recently, he has been a senior resident fellow at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University, as an instructor, advisor, and researcher.
Steve brings a unique blend of global experience, public sector management, and policy development to UVA, as well as a passion for global understanding that will serve us well in our aims to become a leading global public university.
I extend my deepest thanks to the search committee, particularly to search chair vice provost Louis Nelson, for helping us recruit Steve. As a career ambassador—the highest rank in the U.S. Foreign Service—Steve is truly a citizen of the world, who brings both intellectual rigor and a deep commitment to public service to his new role. His email will be email@example.com; you can welcome him starting tomorrow!
