The University of Virginia, as a public institution, makes every effort to communicate its activities openly to the public, principally through the press and other mass media. These communication efforts are in support of the University's overall mission and goals established by the Board of Visitors.
The Office of University Communications is charged by the president with institutional external and internal communication. The Office of University Counsel has overall responsibility for the University's compliance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act. Faculty members are, of course, free to communicate with the media as private citizens or regarding their own scholarship and teaching. Where the press contact involves institution-wide policy and position - including governmental relations issues - the response is coordinated through University Communications.
